Fourth grade mid-term guide

Reading

Students are to study the vocabulary words from the following stories:

The definitions are in your child's reading notebook.  Students should also know
-cause and effect
-main idea

-prefixes and sufixes

The students have notes on all the skills above in their reading notebook and they are also in their reading textbook. 

Social Studies 

-Students are to study all their notes located in their notebooks paying close attention to vocabulary words. They should be able to answer the following questions;

- How did the Algonquian and Iroquois people use their environment to live? 
- name the 5 regions of New York
- know what the Dutch dd when they came to New York
- know detailed information about the John Zenger trial
- be able to explain in detail the difference between slaves and indentured servants

Third grade mid-term guide

Reading
- Students are to study the vocabulary words from the following reading stories.

These words are define in you child's reading notebooks. Students should also know what the following words mean: antonyms, synonyms, homonyms and be able to give examples.they have notes in their notebooks. They can also use their phonics book to study this.

-author's purpose. 


Social Studies


- Students should study all the notes that they have in their notebooks.Specially the vocabulary words and their definition as well as the end of section / chapter questions.

-why do maps have symbols? 
-explain the difference between a globe and a map. 
-name the 7 continents
-name the 4 oceans
-How can you live in more than one community at once? 
- explain in details the two ways of mining

 The students should have these words defined in their reading notebooks already. If not a great way to study would be to write the word on one side of an index card and the definition on the other. The notes on the skills covered are in your child's notebook.

-suffixes: less, ness, ly, er, est.( can use phonics book to reinforce). 

Social Studies

Students have notes on the material being covered in the midterm, but in case not, the information covered is the following :

Third grade reminder

Students will be having a pizza party on Thursday to celebrate Christmas. Please bring in $ 2  for pizza, drinks and snacks. This is due by Wednesday.

Also send your child with a large plastic garbage bag. They will use this to store their books over the Christmas break.

Dismissal on Friday is 12:00 noon and there is no after school.

Fourth grade social studies project

Some students have a project on European explorers due on Tuesday. This was a group project given to the students about two weeks ago. They have had one class period to meet in their group and discuss what part each student was going to have. Students were asked to bring all the information and materials that they decided to contribute last Monday and then they had a class period to meet in groups and put their presentation together. Most groups finished their project as they came prepared with the materials that they were going to contribute.

The project is due Tuesday December 14 and it's worth 100 points.
Everyday the project is late there will be  a10 point deduction. If not received by Friday December 17 the group will receive a grade of 0.

Second grade social studies project

For the last couple of weeks the students have been learning about communities and the people in them. They have focus on community workers ( any person that works by helping others, example doctors, police officers, firefighter etc. ) Last week the students looked at the scholastics site and got some information on community workers.

The second graders have project in which they will pick one community workers based on what ever reason they like. The presentation of the project is to be on a small poster board on construction paper. It will need to have the following:



- Community workers name
- Why you choose that worker ( example; you would like to be that worker when you grow up, a parent or family member is that kind of workers, or you simply like their job).
- Some information about the community worker in the students words. ( three  or four  sentences) Information can be obtained from online or any library book. Do not copy the information out of the text.
- A picture of the community worker ( created by the student or printed from online).

This is due on Thursday December 16, 2010 and it's worth 100 points.

Second grade
-Go to page 186 in the reading textbook and answer questions 1-4. Must write the question and then the answer in sentence form. This is to be done in your reading notebook.

Third
- Complete think and respond questions 1-4 ( it was started as classwork), page 31 from work book. Questions and answers for both assignments in reading notebook.
-Study for quiz on Antonyms, Synonyms and Homonyms. The quiz is tomorrow.

Fourth Grade
- Workbook page 53, Draw the graphic organizer as shown in the book. In reading notebook and in script. Not having it in notebook and in script will result in a zero.

Reminders

-Students must bring all materials needed for class.

- Homework is due the next day. The student will only be excused if they were absent the day the homework was given and therefore dont have the materials needed. If homework is not done it will result in a zero.

-Projects are due on it's due date, not when someone got around to do it. Projects have plenty of time to be completed and it depends on the task. Not having a project on it's due date will result in a zero, unless the child was absent and they have brought a note to school. If you are absent on the day it was due , it is due when you come back to school.

- Think of things you can do to protect turtles. ( they have been discussing this in class, write the answer in your reading notebook.
-Also bring a poster board. It does not have to be expensive and it could be small or medium size, and any color. They can be found at the 99 cent store ( where they usually come in a pack or four or so ), CVS, Duane reade , Rite aid or any local pharmacy or discount store. They also need color pencils/crayons, and glue. ( these are things that I had asked for at the beginning of the school year.

Fourth grade
-Study for social studies quiz on chapter 3. Only study the notes that are for the chapter 3 , not all the notes from chapter 3.

Wednesday Homework

Second grade
- Finish the readers response questions on page 166 in notebook. Write the question and then the answer.
  Also finish the illustration of what the city looks like. This was started in social studies class today.

Third and Fourth grade

-Write my vocabulary words with definition two times each and then use the word in a sentence. This is to be done on loose leaf with complete school heading. In pencil and in (script for the fourth graders). Anything otherwise will receive a 0.

Vocabulary words for week of November 8-12

Biography: An account of a persons life written by someone else.

Autobiography: A biography written by the person themselves.

Subheading: heading or title of a subdivision.

Mystery: fiction that includes secrets or crime that has to be solved.

Realistic fiction: believable fiction set in the present.

Reminders

-All students must come to school with at least two sharpened pencils and/or a small sharpener they can use at their  desk to reduce the distraction of asking classmates for supplies.

- All students must have index cards , as we are using them for the reading vocabulary words.
They must also have something to store the cards in. Stores sell index card holders, but a ring or zip lock bag works as well.

- Please refer back to the test reminders as there has been some changes for this week.

- At the beginning of the school year students were asked to have three folders. One for reading, one for social studies ( which stay in class to store their signed returned test and other classwork), and one for homework( for students to use to bring home test papers to be signed and homework). Some students don't have folders and therefore papers are not being brought home to sign or brought back to class. I will check that students have all these folders , if they do not I will not send home test papers for those students.

- Students are collecting can food  to donate to those who are not as fortunate as others. Please send your child to school with can food , if possible. 

- Third grade only -Students are to be in full uniform everyday , except on Monday's when they wear gym uniform or if they have NUT card. If your child wears anything  else but their uniform without a NUT card they will have after school detention.

Second grade
-Students who did not finish page 190 in class, must finish it at home. Page 190 in the phonics book.
-Study for the social studies test, on unit one pages 4-19 only.
Due to the unit being long , I split the material into two test, tomorrow they will only be tested on pages 4-19 and any notes in their notebook that cover material from those pages.

Third grade
-Students have been working on a project in class on physical features. They must finish their part of the project at  home, if they did not do so in class. It is due tomorrow.
-They must also study for the reading test on Allie's basketball dream.

Fourth grade

Second grade

Define the vocabulary words from the story "Days with frog and toad". The words are on page 100 in the reading textbook. The definition can be found in the glossary. The words should be defined on index cards.One word per index card. The word on one side and the definition on the other. Students were taught how to do this in Friday.


Third Grade

Finish the 4 listening comprehension questions and write down the vocabulary words and the definition from "The olympic games: When heroes are made" on index cards. These words are located on page 130 of their reading textbook.Study for your quiz on different types of literature.


Fourth grade

Answer the readers response questions on page 106 #1-4( in the textbook) and the test practice question . Answer in sentence form in your reading notebook.

Reminders

-Second grade:
Due to the ITBS test given this week , I moved the reading test on Henry and Mudge from this week till next week. The options for the test were  Friday or Monday and the second grade came to an agreement of taking the test on Monday , due to various test on Friday already.

The students must study the vocabulary words from Henry and Mudge and also re-read the story. It is also important if they practice answering the questions at the end of the story.

- This week the students will be taking ITBS and CoGat test.Please make sure your child have three #2 pencils.

- The second grade reading test on " Get up and Go! " , was not given last week as schedule to accommodate students with their various test, and will be given on Tuesday October 12. The students should study from their notes as well as re-read the story  to refresh their memory.

- All students are to get notes that they have missed due to being absent from other students.

Fourth Grade reminders

The fourth grade students should be working on their Hispanic Heritage project. By Wednesday October 13, the students must give in the written part of the project. This part of the project is worth 75 points. The information required is the following; ( The students were told this information in class)

a. An introduction of the person.
- Name
-Place of birth
-Information on their childhood

b. What did they accomplish?
-What are they known for.
- What problems did they encounter on their way to be known. Example: Someone doubted them, they didn't have support from anyone.
-Any other accomplishments that they completed besides what they are known for. Example: charity work.

c. Currently
-Is this person still alive? if they are what are they doing now? if deceased, how did they pass away?

Break down of 100 points
5 points: Your choice of person. Students were suppose to give this in to me.
75 points: Written part of the project. ( see above for details).
20 points: Presentation. ( see below for details).



Presentations.

-Students have three options for presenting their project.
1. Speech about the person. The students will give the audience the most important information about the person. This will be talking in the third person. Example; John is known for his accomplishment. The students are required to have index cards/note cards to give speech.


2. Same as above , except that the students will be talking in the first person.So they will be pretending to be the person. Example: I am John and I was born on July 4, 1920.

3. Visual presentation: The students would use a poster board (nothing fancy). Poster board can be obtained from the 99 cent store or any pharmacy or staples. The poster board must include the persons name on the top as the tittle. There should be pictures of the person at different periods in their life. ( Pictures could be black and white or color). The pictures would be labeled with what is going on in the image. Student is to show and talk about the pictures while giving the audience basic , important information about the person.


The presentations are due on October 15, students will a class time to work on their presentation on October 14.

-Social Studies The students will be working a project in class tomorrow, creating a map. For homework they must braintsorm about the map. They must write in their social studies notebook the tittle of their map and create the map key. They are NOT to create the map. These instructions were reviewed in class.

Fourth grade
-Reading pages 23 and 24 from blue reading workbook to be done in reading notebook. Also define the words on page 68 in your reading textbook. The definitions are in the glossary and they must be defined in your reading notebook.

Fourth grade: Hispanic heritage month Project

The fourth grade students will be completing a project in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage month. This month long celebration has been in place since 1988 and extends from September 15 to October 15. On September 15, the students read information on various Hispanic historical figures featured on the scholastic website.

Students were instructed to choose a Hispanic person in history to work on. Students are  instructed to inform me when they decide on the Hispanic Figure they want to work on. Below is the link for the scholastic site we looked at in class. Students are encouraged to revisit site if they have not decided on the person they want to work on.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage month.

*Not all students have given me names on the people they are planning to do. It is imperative that the students do so, as handing in the name is part of their grade and the overall project is worth 100 points.

Reminders for week of September 13-17

- Children should have all materials required for class.
- If you haven't done so already, please send the emergency cards in.

Vocabulary
- The second, third and fourth grade will have the same weekly vocabulary words.
- There are 15 words, 5 from Mr.Badia, 5 from Ms. Saville and 5 from myself.
- All fifteen words are going to be in the child's vocabulary notebook as well as the blog. My blog will only have my five words, which for this week are as follow: amazing, preserve, vanish,historical and sequence. For the other words check out Mr.Badia's and Ms.Saville's blog.
-Any homework I give will only include my 5 vocabulary words, unless specify otherwise.

   - Read pages 12-17 in text book and be prepared to discuss. 

-Third grade: Find the definition for the following words in the text book and write them in reading notebook.( Department, audience, obeys, commands, expression, accident and notice).
    - Create your own safety tip. The children were given instructions on this in class. They will write the safety tip and also draw an image that correlates with the tip. The picture is NOT the main focus of this assignment.

-Fourth grade: Write the vocabulary words and their definition twice(Vanish, Amazing, Sequence, Historical, Preserved).

Reminder

- All the documents given at the parents meeting are due to school by tomorrow Friday September 10th.

- Third grade's homework
           Book: Bright surprise,  page 12. Answer questions 1-3 about "Dan and Fran"( the story was read in class). This must be done in the reading notebook.

 - Fourth grade homework
          Book: New York ELA review read "The story of the house: A Chinese Folktale on pg 3-4 and answer questions 1-5 on page 5. This must be done on loose-leaf.

Supply List

Fourth grade

  1. Two marble notebooks - one for reading and one for social studies. ( No spiral)
  2. Three folders- One for reading and one for social studies( these will be kept at school), one for homework and notes ( the students will be responsible for this folder). 
  3. Pencils with erasers ( sharpen at home). 
  4. Post-its
  5. A pack of index cards.
  6. A pack of looseleaf.
  7. Color pencils ( no markers).
  8. Glue stick ( no bottle glue).
  9. Scissors.
  10. A case to keep pencils, color pencils, glue stick and scissors.
