Context: the parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning.

Precede: to go before, as in place, order, rank, importance, or time.

Sequence: the following of one thing after another, things going in order like the alphabet.

Chronological: arranged in the order of time.

Halloween Party

As you know on Monday the students are having a Halloween party. Students may come in their costumes. The money they brought will be put towards pizza and drinks. Some also went towards the purchase of sweets for the little ones that will be parading around the school. The students food is cover with the $5 dollars but if your child wants to bring something for the class, its totally optional , but greatly appreciated.

Students and parents

Students and parents,

Next week students will be taking unit exams in all subjects. These exams will cover material from September all the way till now. Students will be told in class what they need to review at home as well as review in class.

The ELA exam for second grade will be on Tuesday November 1.
The reading exam for all three grades (2nd, 3rd and 4th) will be on Thursday November 3.

The ELA exam will cover; (2nd grade only, for info. on ELA for 3rd and 4th grade , see Ms.Saville's blog).
- 4 type of sentences
- naming part of sentence
- action part of sentence
- use of correct grammar( capital letters and correct end marks).
- order words
- format of how to article

The 2nd grade reading exam will cover;
- Vocabulary words from the following stories; Mixed-up chameleon, Hedgehog bakes a cake and , helping out.
- Synonyms
- Antonyms
- compound words
- main idea and supporting details
- the skill of following directions

The 3rd grade reading exam will cover;
- The vocabulary words from the following stories; Turtle bay, Rocking and Rolling and , If you made a million.
- The skill of cause and effect
- prefixes

The fourth grade reading exam will cover;
- The vocabulary words from the following stories; Moon walk, The king in the kitchen and, So, you want to be a president?
- the skill of drawing conclusions
- the skill of main idea and supporting details.

Second grade lesson plans for week of 10/24-28

 Due to ITBS/CoGat testing and make-ups some work from last week has been moved to this week.Also to the extent of the exams, class 2-2 did not take their weekly vocabulary test and will be taking it on Monday 10/24.

Monday 10/24
- HW- Define the vocabulary words from " Helping out" on index cards. Please make that the index cards are being kept together. They should be in a index card holder, but they should still be stapled or held by a paper clip and with childs name on each card. I am constantly finding index cards with no name, which lead to some students getting 0 for homework , as they cant tell who they belong to.


Wednesday 10/26
- HW- Complete page 57 from reading workbook  in your reading notebook(questions and answers) and finish your composition. Some students are done with composition, so not all will be doing this for homework,

Friday 10/28
- Spelling test on unit 16

approach: To come near or nearer, as in space or time. Ex. The car is approaching the intersection or Her birthday is approaching.

storage: a space to put item away in. Ex. The new closet will be great for storage.

harsh:  unpleasantly coarse , rough and severe.

steer: to move or guide into place.

Cause:  the reason for why something happens. ex. because he was fooling around.

Plot: The events that take place in a story. Organized in sequence order of  beginning, middle and end.

REMINDERS FOR PARENTS
- Homework is due the next day. The following are the exceptions; If your child is absent the day the homework is given, the homework is due the day after they come back. If they are absent the day it was collected it must be given in the day they come back.  

- If homework is not given in when due based on the rules above it will result in a 0.

-If homework is to be done on Looseleaf/ worksheet it will be collected in the homework folder and it will be returned in the same way with a grade.( MUST BE IN A FOLDER).

- If your child uses mechanical pencils, please make sure that they have extra lead. Looking for lead and having to ask others , its distracting to them and others. Regular pencils are better.

-If homework is not done where its done where is suppose to be , your child will have a point deducted. 

-Classwork not completed in the right notebook or on looseleaf , due to lack of supplies will result in a deduction of points as well.

Fourth graders

Fourth graders were given book report templates to complete a book report on the story " King in the kitchen". We went over the format in class with the story " Moonwalk", and they have that as a guideline of what is expected. The book report is due on Tuesday October 11. NO EXCUSE , for not being done , as the students have 6 days to do it.

* Students will use the color pencils this Monday. Due to time we were not able to use them last Friday.

HW- Define the vocabulary words from page 242 on index cards.

HW-Homework  was cancelled due to the fact that we did not do main idea in class , because I was not here on Tuesday.

* Students will finish their Turtle Bay project on Monday in class. Some students took their projects home on Friday, please make sure that they are returned. 

Monday 10/3
HW- Prepare to present project in class tomorrow. Copy both charts  ( parts of a book/example)  from textbook page 368 into reading notebook under the aim given in class. Copy the yellow chart exactly as shown. Copy the headings but not the example given. So copy Table of contents , Glossary and Index but not the information given under each section. These sections will be filled-in in class.

Wednesday 10/5
HW- homework was cancelled because the students did not work on using a chart today, due to my absense yesterday, the class was presenting their projects instead.

- HW- On looseleaf complete the end of story questions for " Hedgehog bakes a cake". Questions and answers. #1-4. Due Wednesday in homework folder.
-Write a sentence with 10 out of the 16 vocabualry words in reading notebook.

Wednesday 10/5 _ MASS
- HW- study for test on capital letters, 4 types of sentences and end marks.( the worksheet was not given because we reviewed the questions from the worksheet in class on Monday).

Thursday 10/6
- Test on grammar.
- Review vocabulary words

Friday 10/7
- Vocabulary test
