Native American Artifact project
- Student have been learning about the Native Americans and how they survives using natural resources and how these materialistic resources ( such as weapons, food utensils etc.) are artifacts that archaeologist have used to study and learned about past life before written records. 
- Students have drafted their artifacts explaining what it is, what it does and why it is important. 
- They will now create the artifact ( any material as long as it is safe and small size) and write the information describing its purpose, how it would be made ( in the time of the Native Americans), and how this tool would have been useful for the Iroquois or other Native American group. 

* This is due by next Friday (November 9)


Reading vocabulary words

Poem: written words that express feelings, emotions or thoughts through stanzas sometimes using figurative language. 

metaphor: comparing two or more things not using the words like or as. 

simile: comparing two or more things using the words like or as.

- Students will be reading a book called Sarah, plain and tall starting next Monday, if you can  please get the book, so your child can follow along in class. This book can be found at a public library or can cost about $7 at Barnes and Noble.

Fourth grade vocabulary words for week of October 1-5

Social studies

artifact: an object made by people from the past.

archaeologist: a  scientist who studies artifacts.

prehistory: the period of time before people left written records.

hunter-gatherer: people who hunted and gathered their food. They hunted animals and gathered fruits and vegetables.

clan: a group of Native Americans that share the same ancestors.

heritage: the history and traditions that a group of people share.

ancestors: a person in your family , starting with your parents, who were born before you.

longhouse: a long wooden building in an Iroquois village that housed many families.

confederacy: the government formed by 11 southern states the seceded from the United States.

sachems: a council member of the Iroquois Confederacy.

Reading

Style: the way or manner of doing something.

invent: to think of something new.

critter: an animal.

marine biologist: a scientist that studies animals that live in water.

wacky: strange.

robot: a machine with moving parts controlled by a computer.

blossom: a flower.

Social studies

compass rose: shows directions on a map.

directions: the way a person, place or thing is facing or pointing to.

map scale: a ration of distance on a map compared to the distance in real life.

homeland: country that is your home.

longed: wished very much, desired greatly.

sculptures: work of art created by carving, molding and casting.

still: to make or become calm.

towering: very high.

Social studies

latitude: a distance measured in degrees north and south from the equator.

longitude: a distance measured in degrees east and west of the prime meridian.

coordinates: a set of numbers used to find a place on a map.

map: a drawing that shows what the earth looks like from above,

map key:  a special part of the map that explains the symbols of the map.

 symbols: a drawing on a map that stands for a real place or thing on earth.

distance: how far people, places and things are away from each other.

location: the place where something is.
