MIDTERM STUDY GUIDE

Dear parents,

Midterms  or mid year exams will be given in January , these test will cover the material covered in school from September till January ( Unit 1 and 2). Below you find a study guide of what students need to study. Their vocabulary notebook should be with them as they were instructed to take them home over the break. If you have any questions , don't hesitate to ask, when school resumes.

SECOND GRADE
READING
- All vocabulary words ( they are in their vocabulary notebooks, if not check past post on the blog for words)
- recognizing consonants, vowels and consonant clusters
- recognizing characters, setting, plot
- sequence of events
- using text evidence to answer questions.

SOCIAL STUDIES
- All vocabulary words ( they are in their vocabulary notebooks, if not check past post on the blog for words)
- reading a map

THIRD GRADE
READING

Parents and students

Thank you for all the wonderful presents. I hope you have a wonderful time with your love ones. This is a time of joy , rest and also studying and reviewing using the materials students took home. When we come back from break unit 2 will be ending, unit 3 starting and midterm exams will be given. A midterm study guide for the midterm will be posted the weekend before New Years. On the post below you will find the homework for the break.

CHRISTMAS VACATION HOMEWORK

 2ND GRADE
- Read a book ( THE WHOLE BOOK, so make sure its a book that you can fully read and understand. and create a book report. Include the following;

- title
-author
-characters ( people or animals in the story doing the action)
- setting ( where and when  the story takes place)
- events ( the important things that happen in the story)
- conclusion (the end of the story)
- Your prediction of what should happen next if the book continued. (prediction- guess of what will happen next)
- An image relevant to the story.
DUE JANUARY 3RD.
* On looseleaf, image can be on white paper. Make sure you attach  the pages somehow.



3RD GRADE
- Create a book report for Sarah Plain and Tall. Include the following'
- title
-author
-characters with description
- setting
- events
- conclusion
- Your prediction of what should happen next if the book continued.
- An image relevant to the story.
DUE JANUARY 3RD.
* On looseleaf, image can be on white paper. Make sure you attach  the pages somehow.


4TH GRADE
- Read the Long Winter chapter 4-6.
- For each chapter write a paragraph summary.
- Check the blog back on 12/27 for questions to answer based on the chapters read.

QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTER 4. 5. AND 6.
1. Why was Laura' ma so surprised at the snow storm?
2. Laura's Pa had said they were going to have a harsh winter, what does he mentioned again that supports his theory?
3. Find the evidence in chapter 5, that demonstrates that even though the storm is over the weather is still very harsh.
4. Explain why the cattle weren't eating the hay?
5. Why did Pa not hunt the jackrabbits?
6. Even though the storm ended and the weather seems to be better, why does Pa still not like what he sees?

* Use text evidence to answer these questions. Since the questions were posted on the 28th  instead of the 27th, they are due January 4th , not the 3rd.

HW: Reading- use the words below and write the word and definition three times in reading notebook.
magazine: a publication that appears regularly containing stories and articles.

issue: something printed or sent out to be read.

article: a piece of writing that is part of a magazine.

theme: the main subject or idea.

HW: Read the article " Bye Bye Books?" on page 2 of scholastic magazine. Number the lines and answer the following questions using 3 sentence format ( 1 introductory sentence and one sentence per detail, and you need 2 details)
1. Are there benefits in using digital textbooks?
2. What are some of the problems schools are facing in using digital books?


Tuesday 12/18
HW: Read chapter 3 of The Long winter and write a summary on looseleaf.
Copy the reading and social studies vocabulary  words into your notebook.
Those who were  not with Ms.Mason today need to copy only the reading  vocabulary words.
* Those of you who were with Ms.Mason also need to read lesson 3 from chapter 4 (S.S) and answer end of lesson questions #3-5 Q/A in notebook.

Unit 2 week 5 Social studies vocabulary words
-Tax: money people pay to the government so that it could perform services. ex. police.
-Freedom of press: the right people have to print or tell the news.
-indentured servants: a servant that worked for a certain period of time before they were free. They worked to pay off their boat trip to the colony.
-culture: the way of life of people including their customs, beliefs and languages.
-slavery: the practice of making one person property of another.
- manor: a piece of land that an owner rents in smaller sections to farmers.
- tenant farmers: farmers that rent the small land pieces. They pay the owner by giving them some of what they grow.

Unit 2 week 5 Reading vocabulary words
- Main idea: the most important idea in a text.
- Supporting details: details that support the ideas or theme of the text.
-sloths: slow moving tropical mammals that live in trees.
- vegetation: plant life.
- ecology : environmental science.
- terrain: physical characteristics of the land.
- deforestation: to remove or strip away forest or trees.
- deplete: use up.
