QUARTER EXAM REVIEW GUIDE

SECOND GRADE READING
VOCABULARY: onomatopoeia, homonyms, vowels, consonants, characters, setting, plot, story elements, subheading, captions, bold print. 
All the vocabulary words from the weekly vocabulary sheets.

SKILLS:
  1. Use images and printed words to identify, the characters, setting and plot.
  2. Describe how characters respond to events
  3. Explain the problem and solution
PHONICS:
  1. Identify words that are homonyms and onomatopoeia
  2. identify vowels and consonants
  3. create words with given phonograms.


SECOND GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES
VOCABULARY WORDS: communities, urban, city, rural, suburban (suburb), compare a, contrast, dairy, map, neighborhood, neighbor, symbols, directions, map key.
BE ABLE TO:
  1. Explain/understand what is in each one of the communities (urban, suburb, rural).
  2. Be able to compare and contrast between the types of communities.


THIRD GRADE READING
VOCABULARY: characters, setting, plot. Problem, solution, folktales, myths, character traits, character motivation, sequence, images, illustrations, story elements, recount, longed, homesick, theme. Also the vocabulary words from the weekly vocabulary sheets.
SKILLS:
  1. Explain the central message/moral of the story
  2. Describe the character and their actions
  3. Identify how a characters action has affected the sequence of events.
  4. Retell of a text including the most important components.
  5. Use images and text to make meaning.


THIRD GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES
VOCABULARY WORDS: community, physical features, natural resources, city, suburb, town, rural, map, map key, symbols, compass rose, main directions, longitude, latitude, prime meridian, equator, coordinates, geography, mountain range, plain, desert, river, lake, oceans, peninsula, oceans, coasts. Hemisphere, globe.
BE ABLE TO:
  1. Identify the different types of land forms
  2. Use a map and it's features to find places.
  3. Use coordinates to find place around the world.


FOURTH GRADE READING
VOCABULARY: text features, non-fiction, captions, table on contents, graphs/charts, maps, theme, topic, compare, contrast, folktale, valuable, evidence, devoured.vocabulary words from the weekly vocabulary sheets.

  1. Be able to compare and contrast the themes of text.

  3. Use text evidence to respond to questions.

LESSON PLANS AND REMINDERS FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 27-31


REMINDERS
1. Monday there will be social studies quizzes.
2.Fourth grade is based on pages 70-75(The Iroquois Confederacy)
3.Third grade is based on using latitude and longitude to find places in the world.
4.Second grade is based on reading social studies text and using the text features (captions, subheadings and bold print). The definition of those words are in the green reading book pages 99-100.
5. There will be Halloween parties on October 31- look at the homeroom teacher's blog for more information. Second grade parents look below .
6. Fourth graders are reading The Long Winter. There will be h.w assigned every night from this book.

FOURTH GRADE:   1. Read chapter 2 from the Long Winter- Write one full paragraph summarizing the
                                     chapter.

HOMEWORK FOR OCTOBER 29, 2014

SECOND GRADE: Phonics pages 61, 62, and 63. Using the story on page 63 from phonics answer the following questions. Who is the story about? What are they doing that is important? Where are they? How do they do it? Why do they do it?

THIRD GRADE: Read pages 276-277 from social studies textbook and answer the questions on page 277.

FOURTH GRADE;Read pages 82-85 and answer questions #1-3 from page 85 on loose leaf. Questions and Answers. Also read chapter 3 and 4 and summarize each one in a separate paragraph on loose leaf.


HALLOWEEN 2014
1. Second grade will have a Halloween party this Friday October 31.
2. Please send in $5 by Wednesday.
3. Students may wear a costume. If wearing a costume, please make sure they are wearing a costume when arriving at school. Teachers cannot aid in children getting dressed.
4. For snacks, on Halloween: (Tables 1-2 bring cookies, tables 3-4 bring chips and table 5-6 a box of individual juices)- NO soda please.
5. The younger children will parade around the school trick or treating. Please send, candy for your child to give to the little ones and some to share with the class.
6. Finally, No electronics for the party.

LESSONS AND REMINDERS FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 20-24

REMINDERS
1. Interim assessment in ELA on Tuesday October 21.
2.Math assessment in math on Thursday October 23.
3. FOURTH GRADE- Map a month was due last Friday. There was a month given and students worked on these during homeroom time everyday. It also should have also been done at home. If the map was not given in, it is a zero. NO EXTENSIONS on anything that had a month to be done.
4.SECOND GRADE-we need more empty tissue boxes and more paper towel rolls ( just the brown roll, no actual paper towel.

SECOND GRADE: Complete the vocabulary graffiti . (This includes 1.picking one word from class today. Either homonyms or onomatopoeia. 2.define it using the reading notebook. 3. write or draw examples. 4. make sure the whole paper is cover completely-no white space.) This could be in any design style, not like a formal paragraph or essay.


THIRD GRADE: Reread pages 267-270 from Comparing communities and answer questions A-B (from page 270)and also the Thinking skill question on looseleaf.


FOURTH GRADE: Answer questions # 1-3 from page 69 and also define the words from page 70 on looseleaf.

THIRD GRADE- Answer the  following questions on looseleaf. Do not copy the questions. Use sentence form and details from the text.

1. Describe the Great Plains in the United States.
2. What are the two longest rivers in the United States?
3. Explain what a lake is and identify the Great Lakes.
4. Explain what a ocean is and identify the oceans of the United States.
5. Describe an island and name the state that is an island.
6. Describe a peninsula and identify the states that are peninsulas.

SECOND GRADE- Use the Superkids paper given in class and write the information about Lily that we worked on in class on it. Make sure your name is on it and you can draw a picture in the box.
*The projects for Hispanic Heritage were made in class, but we are welcoming any Hispanic cultural food that you can bring in on Friday.

1. Students homework will be asked for in class and will either be collected by one student or placed in the homework basket. Children are responsible to make sure the teachers get it.

HISPANIC HERITAGE PROJECTS- DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 10,2014

THIRD GRADES
-Each student got a different country in class today.
-Everyone is suppose to get a poster board and display the following information
1. name of the country
2. Capital of the country
3. picture of the country (map)
4.population
5.currency
6.picture of the flag
7.picture of a celebration, important person or event in that country.
8. MAKE SURE THE IMAGES/PICTURES ARE LABELED WITH A CAPTION.

FOURTH GRADE
- Each student got the name of a famous person from a Hispanic country.
-Everyone is suppose to get a poster board and display the following information
1. Name of the person
2. Birthday of the person
3. Birth place
4. Explain what they have done that makes them important. This should be a paragraph.


SECOND GRADE
-  Students will be working in class on their Hispanic Heritage projects.
- On Friday we will have a presentation of the things they and other grades have worked on. If you would like to bring in cultural food to share with the other second graders, please do so.
