CHRISTMAS BREAK HOMEWORK AND MIDTERM STUDY GUIDES

Dear parents and students,

I want to thank you for all the awesome presents and hope you and your families have a blessed and joyful break. Also below is the work that students are to complete over the break. Take your time and do not wait until the night before. Look below next to each grades homework for the midterm study guide. Begin looking at the study guide and the notebook (students were told to take the notebook home) and marking what you need to review and making  a list of what you do not have. You may use a regular dictionary to find the meaning of words you may have missed.

SECOND GRADE ANNOUNCEMENTS !!!- FOR REGULAR WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS LOOK AT THE POST BELOW


Monday:
-Half day dismissal- 12 O'clock.

Tuesday:
-Holiday Assembly at 9am. Wear red and /or green.

Wednesday:
-Trip to the Cloisters. Wear GYM uniform- send money and note with what your child could have from McDonalds.

Thursday:
-We will be packing up - please make sure you send bags ahead of time.


Friday:
-Lessons and carols at 8:30 in church - students will perform the same song from Tuesday. Again wear read and/or green.
-We will be having a Holiday class party. Please send in $3 along with  a snack to share. See below:

6. WEEK CHANGE: On December 11 there will be a full day, where students need to wear full uniform. The scheduled half day has moved to Monday December 14.

-Copy the summary that we began in class (found in the reading notebook) on a looseleaf with full heading. Using the article "Saving the Cranes" in the Super Magazine finish the summary by adding 4 more sentences.
*Tomorrow Thursday December 10, students can wear regular clothes and pay $1. On Friday December 11, they are to wear full uniform.

REMINDERS FOR THE WEEKEND!

Hope everyone has enjoyed their Thanksgiving, spending time with family and relaxing. Now that you have eaten your turkey , it's time to start your reading assignments. You need to access Achieve 3000 and use looseleaf.

I have received a few emails from Achieve of students needing their password, although I can receive the notice and can find your password, I have no way to get it you, unless you email the school and then it gets forwarded to me , which may not happen in a timely manner. If you don't have the password, please send in note with your child and I will write the password down for them. Second grade has their username and password in their homework folder.

SECOND GRADE
1.Read the weekend article (will appear Saturday and Sunday) "Walking School Buses" and answer the following questions:
A. What is the walking school buses?
B. According to the article, how have these groups helped students?


THIRD GRADE

BOOKS FOR MODULE 2

FOURTH GRADE
- This module would not require any text to be bought. Texts will be distributed in class.

THIRD GRADE
-This module we will be working with various text about countries and their culture. As a whole class we will work with the Magic Tree House #27: The Dragon of the Red Dawn. This book cost $3 , if you choose to have me order the book (which I suggest so all students get their book at the same time).
-The students will also work on reading another Magic Tree house book, but this one will be grouped by level of the students reading ability. This book ranges from $3-$5. In order to not post the children s name , I have informed the students on the price of their books. Some students need $6.50, while others need $ 8.75. Please send in the money by Tuesday.

MODULE 1 ASSESSMENTS FOR READING AND SOCIAL STUDIES

As you know this week, students will be taking module 1 exams in all subjects, these are to cover everything we have done so far in the school year. Look below for what you should be studying with your child. Besides the notebooks and books stated below also use the weekly quizzes. The reading exam will not have repeats of the same text or questions, so use the story to practice skills of comprehension and going back to find answers or evidence.

Fourth grade

Halloween Celebration- Second grade

This Friday October 30 we will be having our school Halloween celebration. Students can come in their costumes. As stated on the schools blog , any costumes accessories that promote violence are to stay at home. Please send in $3 for pizza. Students also need a bag of candy to give out to the little ones and candy to share with classmates. Also see below what else to bring for the party.

REMINDERS FOR TOMORROW FRIDAY OCTOBER 23

1. Individual Picture day- Students may dress up, no jeans no sneakers.

2. Reading quiz from last week went home today. We went over the correct answers in class. (except for second grade and they will do this tomorrow). So just sign and send back. If your child did not receive a quiz today is because they did not return the quiz from the week before last.

3. The Scholastic book fair will not be taking place at school this year. The students have the opportunity to order scholastic book from the catalog that went home this week. I will place the order next Thursday October 29. If interested in purchasing books for your child, send the order form and the correct amount due.

HISPANIC HERITAGE

Tomorrow is the Hispanic Heritage Presentations. Second, third and fourth graders will each have a poster board with their individual projects attached. I will get the board, students just need to make sure they have completed their individual sheets.

ACHIEVE 3000 ASSIGNMENT AND HISPANIC HERITAGE PROJECT


THE THIRD AND FOURTH graders will complete the sheet they received on Friday . Third grade is working on important Hispanic People, while fourth grade is working on Hispanic country.

SECOND GRADE will work on completing a "My Family Heritage" project. Students will work on this at school on Tuesday, but in order to do so, they need some information from you.

Need to know:
1. parents name (actual names)
2. Grandparents (maternal and paternal)
3.What country your ancestors came from?
4. What country your parents were from? (the second graders parents)
5.What languages does your family speak?
6.What holidays does your family celebrate?
7.What is one tradition your family has?
8. What is one thing you like to do with your family?
9. They need a picture of just the student. Spot for the individual picture is 2 x 2 inches
10.They need a picture of their family. ( this could be the immediate family/just the people they live with or whole family- your choice). Spot for the family picture is 2 x 4 inches (h x w)

*They will be writing this information on a paper that will be provided in class, so just help them answer this on looseleaf and place in homework  folder for safe keeping.




INSTRUCTIONS TO LOG IN

ACHIEVE 3000 INFORMATION

Achieve 3000 is being done in class during science and social studies  by Mr. Badia and myself. The students have received their user name and passwords. Starting this Friday I will assign an article for your child to read and complete the activity that accompanies it. This will be assigned on Friday and it is due the following Thursday.  So this Friday October 1 they will be assign work that is due by Thursday October 8. This is a separate assignment from any work your child does not finish in school on Achieve 3000 and they have to finish at home.

Once on the site enter the username and password. It will prompt you to select Social studies or science. If you are completing work for me it must be done under social studies , otherwise I will not be able to see the work.

BOOKS REQUIRED FOR MODULE 1 OR DOMAIN 1

Parents as you know this year we will be using a new curriculum. The second grade is divided into 12 domains and will have simultaneously 6 units. Third grade and fourth grade will be following 4 modules throughout the whole school year, which are made up of several units. There are books that the students need to use. At the beginning of the modules or domains I will post the books and cost. If they are available online as PDF's, I will either try to print or ask you to print them ahead of time. I understand the expenses of materials, so I will find the most moderate cost option.


SECOND GRADE
- This domain/units students do not need to get any books. Reading program materials will be given in class.



THIRD GRADE
- Books will be printed and given to students in school.



FOURTH GRADE
- Students will need the following non-fiction book
 The Iroquois: The Six Nations Confederacy by Mary Englar. The cost of the book (tax included) is $8.66.  I most likely will not have any change to give back, so please send in $9. The remaining cents will remain to be put towards future books for this class. Please send the money in by Monday September 14.

Week of September 7-11

REMINDERS 

1. This week there will be no homework. Please just make sure you send in the forms given at the parent meeting and hand in to the homeroom teacher. 

2. Third and Fourth grade parents extended day begins next week. 

THIRD GRADE will stay on Tuesday for ELA with me and for math on Wednesday with Mr.Badia.  Due to a scheduled appointment prior to school starting, third grade will not start ELA extended day this upcoming Tuesday September 15. It will commence September 22. Math on Wednesday September 16  is still in place. 

FOURTH GRADE  will  stay on Tuesday for math and on Thursday with me for ELA. This will start this upcoming week. 

BOTH third and fourth classes will be dismissed through the office door at 5 pm. 


3. SECOND GRADE parents thank you for bringing in the supplies. Your children will be taking back the reusable bags. Some of the bags were not labeled with names and  I am not sure who to send them back with. Please read below and let me know what is yours.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!

Dear second grade parents,

As you already know, this year your child will be entering the departmental setting that ranges from 2nd- 4th grade.  Your child will have three teachers, which they will see for two hour periods for two subjects. I will be their homeroom teacher as well as the reading and social studies teacher. Ms. Saville( 3rd grade homeroom) will be their Religion and ELA teacher and Mr.Badia (4th grade homeroom) will be their math and science teacher.


When looking into the supplies needed for the school year, you must check all three blogs. My supply list is below. In order to get information throughout the school year, you must also visit the blogs for each of three teachers. Before the start of the school year, there will be a meeting with Mr. Woods and also the teachers. Other information will be discussed at that time.




Dear Third and Fourth grade parents,


Hope you are enjoying your summer. In a month school meetings and the start of the school year will be upon us. If your child is new to the school, refer to the message for the second grade parents to get information about the departmental setting breakdown.




Supplies 



2nd Grade

- 2 marble notebooks (one for reading and one for social studies- label with the subject and child's name)
- 3 folders (one for reading, one for social studies and one writing portfolio)- All three will be collected and kept in class-please label with child's name and the subject)
- 2 Looseleaf packs ( will be collected and kept in class for use)
- 2 rolls of paper towels
- 2 containers of bleach wipes
- 2 reams of copy paper
- 2 tissue boxes

*Later on in the year, I would be  more tissue as we run out. 



3rd Grade

General Supplies for All Students 
- Pencils
- erasers
- sharpeners ( ONLY THE ONES THAT COLLECT THE TRASH INSIDE)
- color pencils or crayons ( no markers)
- glue stick- no liquid glue
- bag or case to keep the above supplies
- pack of construction paper- this will be collected and kept at school.

General Announcements 

1. Please label all notebooks and folders with your child's name and the subject before bringing to school. 

2. Your child only needs one set of the general supplies above. 


3. During the school year we will be using books that I will ask students to bring in. The books will be posted in advance to needing them. They can be purchased or borrowed from the public library. If I am able to acquire a pdf version of the books, I will post to blog for you to print.




Below are some rules that must be followed to have a successful school year;


  • Students must be in homeroom by 8 am, if not they will have to get a late pass. If your child is late please make sure they get a late pass instead of sneaking in. If they are not in homeroom by 8:05, they will be marked absent. The absence turns into a lateness with the late pass.
  • Proper school uniform must be worn at all times.
  • Homework, assignments, and reminders will be posted on the blog , so it must be checked regularly- olqmnyc.blogspot.com
  • Appointments to see teachers can be made through the office. No walk ins.
