REMINDERS 

1. Students should read every night between 15-30 minutes.

2. If your child has a classwork folder, make sure to empty it out and send it back so future work can be placed in there. 

3. Students only need to have one folder to carry around from home to school.

VOCABULARY WORDS 

SECOND GRADE: These words were from last week and will be on the next quiz, but over half of the class did not copy them for homework last week as assigned. 

Social Studies 

Candidate: a person who wants to be selected.
Qualification:the things that are required to do something.
ballots: a slip of paper or machines that allows you to vote.
campaign: action taken to get a goal done.
election: the event where people vote (pick/choose) the person they want.

advertisement: way of persuading people to do something

Reading

adventure fiction: text where characters face a problem or hard situation while on a quest or journey.

galloped: riding a horse

screeched: a high pitch sound.

stranded: the act of being trapped or stuck.

island: a piece of land surrounded by water on all sides.

THIRD GRADE: Here are the definitions for last weeks words.

Social Studies 
biography: a non-fiction text about someones life written by someone else. 

Cesar Chavez: Mexican-American who fought for the rights of farm workers by using non-violent methods such as boycotts and strikes. 

 Boycott: the act of not buying products from someone as a form of protest. 

 Union: group of people who come together to have a voice in the conditions and treatment they receive at work. 

 Strike: the act of workers refusing to work and protesting to get better working conditions. 

Great Depression: a time from the 1930's to 1940's where the economy was not doing well. People lost jobs and many business closed. 


FOURTH GRADE: Here are the words for this week, define them using the textbook. 

Social Studies 
Time line, surrender, retreat, Battle of Saratoga, Battle of Yorktown, convention, representative, capital, constitution, ratify, John Jay, George Clinton, Albany, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, and Martha Washington. 

Reading 
comparatives: words that compare two things.

vibrations: to shake back and forth very quickly. 

Sumatran Tigers: the smallest surviving tiger subspecies and are distinguished by heavy black stripes on their orange coats.

historical fiction: a story that takes place in the past and the events or characters are real or both, but the dialogue is made up. 

delay: to hold up or make late.

REMINDERS

1. No homework except studying this week.

2. Math and science exam on Wednesday. 

3. Reading and Religion exam of Thursday.

4. Social studies and ELA exam on Friday.

5. Students should read every night between 15-30 minutes.

6. Students were given back folders with papers from this quarter. PLEASE LEAVE AT HOME. I do not want it back. 

7. Some students papers are not in folders because they never returned the folders from the last time I gave it back. 

8. As I was reviewing with students , many were missing vocabulary words, the vocabulary words are part of homework to copy and then we use them in class. Not completing homework gets the students zero and then they don't have them to study. Please make sure as we enter the new quarter, that they copy words were assigned.

SECOND GRADE

1. Review pages 3-7 from Ready New York book (green book)
2. Read A Prickly Adventure from Ready NY book page 8-9 and answer questions 1-4 on pages 9-10.- WRITE IN THE BOOK
3. With the help of a parent students will research laws ( could be laws that apply to NY only or the whole United States). It can be any law that you can help your child understand and they can then explain in class. Students will write the law and an explanation of what it means. Create or print a picture that applies to the law. Do this on looseleaf with full heading.

THIRD GRADE

1. Read Cleopatra Finds Her Voice on pages 58-59 of Ready New York book(red book) and answer questions #1-5 from pages 59-60. On looseleaf: label the page with title of story , pages. Multiple choice questions need only letter answer. Use complete sentences for #5.
2. Create a biography of an important Mexican person. Include the persons name, birth date, birth city, information about their childhood, why they are important. DO NOT COPY FROM A SITE OR BOOK-THAT IS PLAGIARISM AND GETS A ZERO. Read the information you find and write the biography using your own words from what you learned.

-THIRD GRADE PROJECT- create a time line on Mexico using the homework and the sheets given in class. You can be creative as to how you want this to look, the images below can help you guide yourself. Make sure the events are in sequence order. This is due Thursday December 18. If the homework sheet is not attached to the project, you will loose 5 points.
-Social studies words from last week are still being used plus;Aztecs, Guadalupe, Juan Diego, Tepeyac and Tilma.

WEEKLY READING VOCABULARY WORDS
FOURTH GRADE
1. informational text: a type of text that gives you information about a topic.
2. native: born in a particular place.
3.South America: a continent below North American. Home to Hispanic countries.
4.dormant: not active
5.cultivate:prepare and use (land) for crops or gardening. to try to acquire.
6. Spain: a Hispanic country located in the continent of Europe. 

THIRD GRADE

1. main idea: the most important idea in a text. What the text is mostly about.

2. supporting details: details from the text that support /justify the main idea.

3.personal essay: a text that is written to either inform or entertain. 

4.purpose: the reason behind doing something. 

5. Authors purpose: the reason an author writes a text. Inform, persuade or entertain.
6 inform: give information about a topic. Mostly non-fiction.
7.entertain: to cause joy or excitement. 
8.homophones: words that sound the same but have different meaning. 
9.plain:a large area of land that is mostly flat or something that doesn't have anything extra on it. 

SECOND GRADE: 

Inventions: a unique new or improved item.

Dusk: early evening.

Damage: to harm or destroy

burrow: a hole or tunnel in the ground made by a small animal.

deserts: a large area of land where little rain, water, plants and trees.
