Second grade final review for reading and social studies

Students are to study the reading vocabulary words from the reading stories we have covered.

A. The Mixed Up Chameleon
B. Get Up and Go
C. Henry and Mudge
D. Days with Frog and Toad
E. Wilson Sat Alone
F. The Enormous Turnip
G. Helping Out
H. Mr. Putter and Tabby fly the plane
I. Lemonade for Sale
J. Johnny Appleseed
K. From Seed to plant
L. Pumpkin Fiesta
M Dear Mr. Blueberry
N. Hedgehog bakes a cake
O. The secret life of trees
P. Watermelon day

 The students should have these words defined in their reading notebooks already. If not these words can be found in the text book and the definitions are in the glossary. A great way to study would be to write the word on one side of an index card and the definition on the other. The notes on the skills covered are in your child's notebook. The skills will be tested on the final through reading comprehension questions using passages read on the test.
The following are the skills that will be covered;

- Main idea
- inflections -ed.
-comparing and contrasting
-alphabetizing by first and second letters
- sequencing of events.
-suffixes: less, ness, ly, er, est.( can use phonics book to reinforce). 
- Fact and opinion
- Making inferences
- cause and effect
- authors purpose
- making predictions
- Narrative elements ( characters, setting(time and place),plot ( problem and solution)

Social Studies  
Students are to study all their notes in their social studies notebooks, including the end of chapter unit questions and the vocabulary words. This is all in their notebooks, if not you can use the textbooks to help your child study.
Students should know the following;
- How to use a picture glossary
- what is a map key
- how people earn and spend money
- Who is Abraham Lincoln , Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Susan B. Anthony and George Washington
- how to read and understand a bar graph
- different types of landforms

The test will also include a DBQ in which your child analyzes  pictures, answers short questions on all  and then answers a main questions about all  pictures.
