MIDTERM STUDY GUIDE

Dear parents,

Midterms  or mid year exams will be given in January , these test will cover the material covered in school from September till January ( Unit 1 and 2). Below you find a study guide of what students need to study. Their vocabulary notebook should be with them as they were instructed to take them home over the break. If you have any questions , don't hesitate to ask, when school resumes.

Parents and students

Thank you for all the wonderful presents. I hope you have a wonderful time with your love ones. This is a time of joy , rest and also studying and reviewing using the materials students took home. When we come back from break unit 2 will be ending, unit 3 starting and midterm exams will be given. A midterm study guide for the midterm will be posted the weekend before New Years. On the post below you will find the homework for the break.

CHRISTMAS VACATION HOMEWORK

 2ND GRADE
- Read a book ( THE WHOLE BOOK, so make sure its a book that you can fully read and understand. and create a book report. Include the following;

- title
-author
-characters ( people or animals in the story doing the action)
- setting ( where and when  the story takes place)
- events ( the important things that happen in the story)
- conclusion (the end of the story)
- Your prediction of what should happen next if the book continued. (prediction- guess of what will happen next)
- An image relevant to the story.
DUE JANUARY 3RD.
* On looseleaf, image can be on white paper. Make sure you attach  the pages somehow.



3RD GRADE
- Create a book report for Sarah Plain and Tall. Include the following'
- title
-author
-characters with description
- setting
- events
- conclusion
- Your prediction of what should happen next if the book continued.
- An image relevant to the story.
DUE JANUARY 3RD.

4TH GRADE
- Read the Long Winter chapter 4-6.
- For each chapter write a paragraph summary.
- Check the blog back on 12/27 for questions to answer based on the chapters read.

QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTER 4. 5. AND 6.
1. Why was Laura' ma so surprised at the snow storm?
2. Laura's Pa had said they were going to have a harsh winter, what does he mentioned again that supports his theory?
3. Find the evidence in chapter 5, that demonstrates that even though the storm is over the weather is still very harsh.
4. Explain why the cattle weren't eating the hay?
5. Why did Pa not hunt the jackrabbits?
6. Even though the storm ended and the weather seems to be better, why does Pa still not like what he sees?

* Use text evidence to answer these questions. Since the questions were posted on the 28th  instead of the 27th, they are due January 4th , not the 3rd.

Unit 2 week 5 Social studies vocabulary words
-Tax: money people pay to the government so that it could perform services. ex. police.
-Freedom of press: the right people have to print or tell the news.
-indentured servants: a servant that worked for a certain period of time before they were free. They worked to pay off their boat trip to the colony.
-culture: the way of life of people including their customs, beliefs and languages.
-slavery: the practice of making one person property of another.
- manor: a piece of land that an owner rents in smaller sections to farmers.
- tenant farmers: farmers that rent the small land pieces. They pay the owner by giving them some of what they grow.

Unit 2 week 5 Reading vocabulary words
- Main idea: the most important idea in a text.
- Supporting details: details that support the ideas or theme of the text.
-sloths: slow moving tropical mammals that live in trees.
- vegetation: plant life.
- ecology : environmental science.
- terrain: physical characteristics of the land.
- deforestation: to remove or strip away forest or trees.
- deplete: use up.

SECOND GRADE ONLY!

Dear second grade parents,

As some of you have seen in the calendar, the second graders are going on a school trip to the Museum of the city of New York. On the calendar the day that was previously selected was Nov. 15. due to some changes, the date has been moved to Nov. 19. In their folder your child has a permission slip. They must return the slip with $7 , which is the cost of the trip.

For  the day of the trip, your child must
- wear school gym uniform with comfortable sneakers
- bring lunch ( that does not require heating up), in a small bag to carry on their own.
- NO glass bottles
- NO book bag

Please be aware that your child is taking the train and then walking to the museum which is located on fifth avenue and 103 street. We also won't be back till approximately 3:30pm.

Como ustedes saben , los ninos del segundo grado van a ir a un paseo al museo de la cuidad de Nueva York. El calendario dice Nov. 15 , pero los tuvimos que cambiar para Nov. 19. Su hijo/hija tiene que traer el permiso firmano por usted y $7 para cubril el costo del paseo.

Para el dia del paseo, su hijo/hija ;
-  tiene que vestir en ropa de gymnacio de la escuela con tenis
- trael almuerzo ( que no necesite ser calentado) en una bolsa pequena, que puedan cargal solos.
- NO botellas de cristal
- No bolsas de escuela

Los ninos se van a montar en el tren y despues van a caminar al museo, que esta localizado en la quinta avenidad y la calle 103. Regreseremos approximadamente a las 3:30 pm.

Native American Artifact project
- Student have been learning about the Native Americans and how they survives using natural resources and how these materialistic resources ( such as weapons, food utensils etc.) are artifacts that archaeologist have used to study and learned about past life before written records. 
- Students have drafted their artifacts explaining what it is, what it does and why it is important. 
- They will now create the artifact ( any material as long as it is safe and small size) and write the information describing its purpose, how it would be made ( in the time of the Native Americans), and how this tool would have been useful for the Iroquois or other Native American group. 

* This is due by next Friday (November 9)

Fourth grade vocabulary words for week of October 1-5

Social studies

artifact: an object made by people from the past.

archaeologist: a  scientist who studies artifacts.

prehistory: the period of time before people left written records.

hunter-gatherer: people who hunted and gathered their food. They hunted animals and gathered fruits and vegetables.

clan: a group of Native Americans that share the same ancestors.

heritage: the history and traditions that a group of people share.

ancestors: a person in your family , starting with your parents, who were born before you.

longhouse: a long wooden building in an Iroquois village that housed many families.

confederacy: the government formed by 11 southern states the seceded from the United States.

sachems: a council member of the Iroquois Confederacy.

Second grade Community Project

Second graders will making a booklet about the three communities they have learned about; urban, suburban, and rural community. The booklet will include images and a description of it. The booklet will include the following;
- a cover with title image and your name
- table of contents: list of the the communities and its page number in the booklet.
- the three communities one per  page
- a back cover

Hispanic Heritage Month Project

Dear Parents,

As some of you may know from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Due to this the students have been learning about famous Hispanic people, as well as Hispanic countries. In celebration of this project, 2nd, 3rd , and 4th grade will be involved in certain projects.

4th grade
- Students research topic can be found below. They will create write a two paragraph paper on information about the person and a diorama portraying the importance of their subject. This project will be presented in class as receive a social studies grade. They will also create a two minute speech with the information they researched and present it to Ms.Saville.The information will include information about their  - nationality
        - childhood/adolescent
        - accomplishments/merit

3rd grade

tease: to irritate or provoke. To annoy with the same repeated action.

squawked: to utter a loud, harsh cry.

braided: to weave together strips, string, ribbon or hair.

fist: the hand closed tightly.

fastened: to attach securely in place.

cartwheel: the movement of the body from standing position to hands on the floor , sideways and usually in repeated manner.

seriously: in a calm manner. a sincere or thoughtful manner.

Natural resources: something found in the environment that people can use.

renewable resources: a resource that can be renewed or replace.

port: a place where ships can load and unload their goods.

city: a large community with many people, buildings and cars. Not a lot of green areas.

suburb: a community near a city with houses, not many stores and only some buildings.
