REMINDERS, VOCABULARY, HOMEWORK AND LESSON PLANS FOR WEEK OF APRIL 27-MAY 1

REMINDERS

1. The mass on Wednesday will be led by the second grade students.

2. There will be quizzes on Friday, May 1.

3. Summer uniform guidelines will begin May 1.

4. FRIDAY QUIZ SCHEDULE

- SECOND GRADE: SOCIAL STUDIES
   Vocabulary words: democratic, jury system,trial, court, judge, lawyer and verdict.
   Notes: requirements to be part of the jury and the process of picking a juror
   Next quiz will be on vocabulary words; plaintiff, defendant, unanimous and deliberation.
   Notes: What happens during a case and what happens at at the end of the trial.

-THIRD GRADE: READING
   Vocabulary words: #1-3 only; cause, effect, tall tale and reading comprehension
   Next reading quiz will include words # 4-11 from this week and reading comprehension.

- FOURTH GRADE: SOCIAL STUDIES
  Vocabulary words: frontier, Big Tree Treaty, War of 1812, Treaty of Ghent, Erie Canal,
   Robert Fulton, De Witt Clinton.
   Notes from chapter 7 lesson 1 and 2.

5. MONDAY MAY 4

-SECOND GRADE: READING
  Vocabulary words: cause, effect, tall tale and reading comprehension

-THIRD GRADE: SOCIAL STUDIES
  Vocabulary words: Asia, China, landforms, generations, scholar, ancient, dialects, emperor, compass   and civilization and notes

 Vocabulary words: theme, delay, Nazi and reading comprehension.



HOMEWORK FOR APRIL 27 , 2015

SECOND GRADE:
- Compare and contrast Spring and Winter on looseleaf Use an image to compare the two as well.( separate sheets for writing and picture.

THIRD GRADE:
- On looseleaf describe a new food you would like to invent. One complete paragraph - Due tomorrow.

FOURTH GRADE:
- ANSWER THE QUESTIONS FROM PAGE 183- THINKING ABOUT FACTS IN NOTEBOOK.- Due Tomorrow

READING
1. cause: why something happens
2. effect: what happens
3. tall tales: fiction story ,usually based on a real person but the abilities of the person have been exaggerated.


SOCIAL STUDIES
1. plaintiff: the side in a court case that have been wronged.
2.defendant:the person in a court case who has been accused or who is being sued.
3.unanimous: agreed on by everyone.
4.deliberation: a meeting that is held to consider something carefully.

READING
1. cause: the reason something happens. The "Why?"
2. effect: what happens. (events)
3. tall tale: fiction stories
4. union: joining together for a specific reason.
5. justice:just behavior
6. tranquility: calm ; peace
7. defense:the act of defending from or resisting attack.
8. welfare: the health, happiness or well being of someone.
9. liberty: freedom
10. posterity: all future generations
11. constitution: a body of important principles created to state how a state or country is governed.

SOCIAL STUDIES
1. civilization: a group of people with highly developed farming, trade, government, art and science.
2. compass: an instrument for showing directions.
3.ancient: very old.
4. dialects: a form of language spoken in a particular area or by a particular group of people.
5. landforms: a feature of earth's surface like a mountain or hill.
6.generations: the people born in the same period.
7.scholar:a well-educated person who has a great deal of knowledge.
8.emperor: a ruler.

READING
1. Theme:message or lesson about how to live in the world and act toward other people.
2. delay: to hold up or make late.
3. Nazi: group of people under German ruler Adolph Hitler rule, who disliked Jewish people.



SOCIAL STUDIES 
1. industry: all business that make one kind of product or service.
2. tanning: a way of scratching and soaking the skins in a mixture of water and tree bark.
3.factories: place where good are made in large numbers.
4. Industrial revolution:the major change, starting in the 1800's, in which power-driven machines replaced hand tools.
5. immigrants: people who come to a new country to live.
6.famine: shortage of food.
7. Central Park: large public park built in NYC between 1857-1876.
